BCC: Politicians don’t understand business needs
28.04.08
The poll, commissioned by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), revealed low levels of confidence among entrepreneurs.
The research also suggested less than 20% of businesses believe the next government will prioritise the needs of businesses.
When asked whether a Labour or Conservative government would pay more attention to the needs of business, the answer was ‘low for both parties’, with just 14% of businesses placing their faith in Labour, and 22% in the Conservatives.
More than a third of businesses said taxation was their most important issue, with almost 30% saying the priority should be red tape, and just over 10% placing an emphasis on transport.
David Frost, director general of the BCC, said the figures paint a ‘depressing’ picture.
“With many having very little practical experience working in business, it is unsurprising that MPs do not come across as sympathetic to the need of business,” he said.
“High levels of tax are clearly the number one problem. The main competitors for British firms are no longer in the neighbouring streets or towns, but half way around the world in countries with lower rates of tax.
“If we are to remain competitive then the government must cut taxes for both large and small firms and look at reducing other damaging taxes such as fuel duty,” he said.
