BCC: ‘Businesses get a raw deal from energy suppliers’
10.08.08
The BCC is calling for the creation of a “new, independent and dedicated watchdog” to be established, which is specifically focused on the energy concerns and needs of business. Analysis from consumer champion Energywatch revealed that they receive 32,000 calls from businesses seeking help and advice every year.
The business lobby group claimed that businesses are “significantly more vulnerable to exploitation and unfair practice by energy firms” when compared to domestic energy users. It claims that while domestic suppliers are required to publish their tariffs, there is no regulatory requirement covering business suppliers.
Also, the BCC highlights that whereas domestic consumers are able to switch contracts every 28 days, businesses often find themselves locked into long-term contracts of anything up to five years.
David Frost, director general of the BCC said: “With the economy slowing and energy bills on the rise, it is totally unacceptable that hard presses businesses are left so open to exploitation by energy suppliers.”
